'The hint of fear is more fearful than fear itself.' (I must admit that I was not the one to originate this sentiment and must give due credit for it to my father)
Just imagine:
You are sitting alone on a beach, listening to the waves crash the rocks, no clouds in the sky, no moon, no light except from the stars, no sound except the sea and wind, no soul around for miles. You close your eyes for a minute. You open your eyes and sitting beside you is a woman staring at you: thin as a skeleton, threadbare clothes, long unkempt damp hair, broken, black teeth, colorless eyes, skin pale and blotched with dark patches because of lack of sunlight, long nails, almost as if she’s a corpse some out of the grave… what will you do? run?... she might catch you. Scream?... no one to hear you. Cry, throw stones at her? Get a heart attack? … I probably will.
Now imagine the same, but you are sitting in a park, on a sunny morning, lotsa ppl playing around having fun, kids running, Frisbees flying, laughter. You open your eyes to see her sitting beside you, staring… What will you do? will you start shouting and warn everyone that Samara from ‘The Ring’ is here, and everyone’s gotta get the hell outta here? Or will you shoo her away thinking she’s a beggar? Or if you are a kind hearted soul, give her your sandwich, and juice and hat, and ask her to go see a doctor?
So it’s not actually the ‘ghost’ that’s scary, it’s the situation. It’s the fear of what she ‘might be’ capable of, that’s scary… but then, if she can kill you (I’m using kill, because death, according to me is the worst that can ever happen to a human being… of course, torture and kill, and doom to hell for all eternity might also be considered here) so, if she can kill you on a dark and lonely beach, she can kill you in a bright and sunny park too… and with better effects and popularity! So basically, your brain knows that she indeed, can NOT kill you, but it’s rather difficult to use this logic when your heart’s busy getting an attack.
Most people in this world (including me) are afraid of things like dark, or being alone, or of closed spaces. It’s justified to be afraid of robbers, of murderers, dentists, or headmasters… they can hurt you you KNOW they can. But the fear of there being a possibility of there being ‘something’ in the dark corner of your room or under your bed, or lurking behind the curtain, is much more common… and admit it… scary! :D
The things to be feared most in this world; ghosts, Zombies, vampires… things not a single soul has ever seen before, fictions of imagination all. But what’s more scary is the thought of there being one of the above, on the other side of the door. In short, it’s the fear of the unknown, of the ‘What if?’
